Its getting closer to the holiday season and that means wish lists, Christmas lists, and people start to buy presents for the holidays. As this season gets closer we like to talk about what equipment is the right equipment to buy and when. As a full store, most people assume we want players to purchase expensive items like new markers and tanks. In reality, we want players to purchase the most impactful equipment. This means that we want players to buy the piece of equipment that will make the biggest difference in their overall day of paintball. Sometimes that piece of equipment is the marker but in general, the first piece of equipment we recommend purchasing is a good goggle system or mask. The mask can make an immediate difference when playing paintball. Comfort is increased, security and safety, weight is reduced and many other differences that we will go over below.
The main reason that the mask is the most important piece of equipment is because if you have a bad mask and can’t see clearly then, no matter how good your equipment is, you won't be able to use it effectively. A good mask will make sure that you are getting the most out whatever equipment you are using, a bad mask will make any equipment you use seem that much worse.
So when you go to look for a mask there are a few main things to look for. The first is the overall fit. The amount of people who ask “what is the best mask on the market?” is overwhelming and there is no one answer. A huge factor in your first mask purchase needs to be how does it fit on your face. Masks are just like glasses, each mask will fit your face differently. Buying a mask without trying it on won't ruin your mask purchase but it's best to try them on. Once you find the masks that fit your face properly you can move on to the next checkmarks.
Once you’ve chosen the masks that fit your face well, you should check for overall protection. Masks are made of different plastics and rubbers and each has a different amount of “give” to it. It’s important to get a mask that not only fits, but offers the amount of protection you want.
While you are checking for fit, keep an eye on the lens in the mask as well. Each mask will have a different lens system and this is another really important factor. Any high end mask will have a great lens. But, each lens will be different. It's important that your sight is not limited while wearing a mask so look around, move your eyes and make sure your sight is unobstructed.
The last factor should be price. This IS an important factor but you shouldn’t sacrifice your sight for a few dollars. Once you have picked out a few masks that fit great, are comfortable, offer ample protection and great sight, then it is time to compare costs. A really solid mask will cost in the range of $60-$150 but it will be worth every penny. No matter what equipment you use, your mask will either enhance or hinder its performance. After all, you can’t shoot what you can't see. We encourage anyone looking to purchase a mask to come to the shop and try one on! You can also order any mask through our online shop. Paintball masks aren’t often the fanciest piece of equipment but they are the most important.
